FRDC Development Opportunities
The majority of the FRDC’s 2010 Development Opportunities will be advertised in the March 2010 edition of the FRDC’s FISH magazine. Successful applicants will be announced in late May 2010. Please note, that this timing does not apply to all of the opportunities, with the National Seafood Industry Leadership Program, Australian Rural Leadership Program, the Nuffield Australia Farming Scholarships and WINSC Professional Development Scholarship all operating with their own separate timelines (see below for more detailed information on timing).
The Aquatic Animal Health Training Scheme is jointly funded by the Department of Agriculture Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) and the FRDC. The aim of the training scheme is to improve knowledge and skills in aquatic animal health management to support Australia’s fishing and aquaculture industry, including the aquarium sector. Funding is available on a competitive basis to support individuals to undertake short, focused training activities, within Australia or overseas. The scheme also encourages applications from organisations for alternative approaches to skills development including, but not limited to, visiting experts and master classes. Eligibility Advice to applicants The focus of the scheme is on up-skilling rather than basic training. It is not intended that this scheme fund degree courses. To assist applicants, information on a range of Australian and international courses has been collected, and is available on request from the FRDC people development program manager. This list is not exhaustive, and does not claim to identify all relevant training opportunities. While there is no cap on the amount awarded to a successful applicant, the total amount available for the scheme over three years is $212,000. The scheme will cover basic costs associated with attending courses or obtaining and disseminating new skills. This includes economy travel, accommodation, course fees. Where funding is provided for visiting experts and master classes, consideration must be given to the capture of information for ongoing use. Value for money will be a primary consideration when assessing applications. Applications that secure financial support from employers, other funding sources or industry will be viewed positively. At conclusion of the award, the recipient will also be expected to provide a final report to the FRDC, and provide a statement of expenses. How to apply – important information Applications should be submitted through your employer, or a host organisation or business, rather than by unattached individuals. If successful in their application, your employer or host organisation will enter into a Development Award Deed of Agreement with the FRDC, which will detail the terms and conditions upon which the award is being provided, and for which funds may be committed and/or expended. Applications for Aquatic Animal Health Training Scheme should be made through the FRDC’s online application system, FishNET, which can be accessed through the FRDC’s homepage: http://www.frdc.com.au/research/fishnet-for-applicants. The application should be completed using the Pre Research Proposal template and the project title should commence with “Aquatic Animal Health Training Scheme:” followed by the name of the applicant. Under ‘Methodology’ applicants should describe a detailed program of activities that will be undertaken and budget details. Once an application has been finalised on FishNet, the FRDC’s Program Manager - People Development should be notified via email or phone (see below for contact details). Before finalising your application, please nominate the Aquatic animal health and People Development sub-programs as review recipients. Applications close on 18th June 2010. All applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application by the end of July 2010. For further information contact Neil Garbutt at neil.garbutt@frdc.com.au or telephone (02) 6285 0400.
