National Climate Change Adaptation Plan: Marine Biodiversity and Resources

The National Climate Change Adaptation Research Plan (NARP) for Marine Biodiversity and Resources, available from NCCARF, identifies research required over the next 5-7 years to inform policy development and help managers of coastal ecosystems and the marine environment and associated industries and communities prepare for the consequences of climate change. It provides a framework to guide research funding decisions and key directions for Australia’s marine research community. This Plan, together with research plans in other priority thematic areas will guide researchers generating the information Australia needs to develop an effective portfolio of adaptation strategies.

The Plan takes a sectoral approach to the identification of stakeholders and their priority information needs, focussing on aquaculture, commercial and recreational fisheries, conservation, and tourism. It also recognises the high importance of systems-based cross-sectoral research. We note that there are many Indigenous communities around the Australian coast for which climate change impacts on marine biodiversity and resources are likely to have significant implications. This Research Plan does not consider those issues related specifically to Indigenous culture and subsistence use. Those issues will be considered in a National Climate Change Adaptation Research Plan devoted to the Indigenous communities of Australia.

Report Card of Marine Climate Change for Australia (2009)

This Report Card summarises present knowledge on marine climate change impacts and identifies knowledge gaps and adaptation responses in Australia. It was produced by an author team representing 35 universities and organisations, a project team from the CSIRO Climate Adaptation National Research Flagship, and a steering group comprising representatives from the sponsor organisations [National Climate Change and Adaptation Research Facility (NCCARF); CSIRO Climate Adaptation National Research Flagship; and the Australian Climate Change Science Program (ACCSP)].

Issues in food miles and carbon labelling

The objective in this report is to examine international economic issues surrounding recent campaigns to label food products with indicators based on concepts such as ‘food miles’ and ‘carbon labelling’. These have been proposed as measures to inform consumers. Food miles is a measure of the distance food travels from farmer to consumer. Proponents of the food miles concept encourage consumers to purchase food products with lower food miles, mainly to reduce carbon emissions from energy use in the food supply chain. However, recent studies highlight the limitations of the food miles concept. Food miles has the potential to distort international trade outcomes and may result in higher, not lower, global carbon emissions.
