One in a Thousand
Teaching kids about turtles is the topic of the educational kit ‘One in a Thousand’, including a DVD and a series of teacher’s resources.The documentary-styled DVD has been developed to coincide with the International Year of the Turtle. The DVD was funded by the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation (FRDC) as part of a larger three-year $350,000 research project into sea turtle conservation. This DVD follows the story of a turtle found injured on a beach and highlights best practice techniques to maximise survival. It is also a source of comprehensive information on identification through to the turtle lifecycle. The story has been developed to appeal to children, and coupled with captivating video sequences, it’s edutainment at its best. Only one in a thousand turtle hatchlings survive to adulthood. So educational resources such as this that help educate children on enhancing turtle survival, are invaluable to ensuring that turtles are around for a long time to come. A teacher’s resource pack has also been developed to further educate students about one of Australia’s majestic sea animals.
