Atlantic Salmon Aquaculture Subprogram

The Atlantic Salmon Aquaculture Subprogram (ASAS) started in July 2000 to research, promote and further develop a sustainable Atlantic salmon industry in Australia. The objectives of the ASAS are to:

  1. involve industry in all facets of research and development to ensure adoption of the outcomes.
  2. develop research outcomes that result in increased profitability and reduced risk.
  3. empower industry to be actively responsible for its own research and development.
  4. develop a communication strategy that delivers results in a timely and readily usable form.

The ASAS has made excellent progress during the past year. There has been a large increase in the number and size of research projects. The CRC for Sustainable Aquaculture of Finfish (AQUAFIN CRC) is now up and running and the total funding for Atlantic salmon research and development over the next three years, through the AQUAFIN CRC and FRDC, is around $4.3 million. This represents a doubling in funding and does not include the increase in direct and in-kind research provider and industry funding.
