The Fisheries Research and Development Corporation (FRDC) undertakes regular market research with the Corporation’s key stakeholder groups to gain an understanding of their views on key issues and on the corporation itself. In addition the FRDC undertakes consumer and community research to gain an understanding of community and consumer views.
The research program runs on an annual cycle focusing on different stakeholders, and using different research. Research undertaken includes face-to-face qualitative in-depth interviews with key stakeholders (e.g. state government fisheries managers, representatives from industry associations and research organisations); quantitative telephone surveys with grass-roots operators from across a range of fisheries and aquaculture; and FISH Magazine reader surveys.
The overarching aim of the research is to assist FRDC with improving its organisational strategy, management and performance by systematic measurement and monitoring of sentiment among ‘grassroots’ fishing and seafood operators and key stakeholders, and identifying strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. The community research is also used to evaluate how extension and dissemination of research findings impact on perceptions of activity.
