Objectives

1. To determine for the southern states of Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania:(i)the location, quality, seasonality and nature of the existing sources of fish waste, trash and bycatch(ii) the current fate of the existing wastes.(iii) an estimate of the levels of trash and by-catch that might be landed if some financial incentive were offered, and a price level which is consistent with profitable silage manufacture
2. To determine:(i) the relative nutritional and economic benefits of fish silage compared with other feedstuffs, with particular reference to protein and flesh colouration.(ii) the options for using silage pre se directly as an aquaculture feedstuff(iii) its comopatability with existing feedstuffs, and with new feed combinations(iv) the value of silage relative to its current use (ferfilizer, blood and bone etc.) and the change in costs related to waste disposal for processors.
3. To identify end users (aquaculture and livestock industries) processors, feedmillers, potential waste disposal businessess, etc which might develop and commercialise the concept for use in aquaculture within their region.
