Results of the National Aquaculture Industry Biosecurity Survey indicated that self or internal auditing can be used by farmers to evaluate the effectiveness of their biosecurity plan and identify gaps or areas for improvement. However, most farmers are not sufficiently trained to properly audit an aquaculture biosecurity plan; limiting their ability to improve their plans.
This project seeks to create a network of trained biosecurity auditors to assist the aquaculture industry with self-auditing. For each course, approximately twenty officers from across the state and territories will be trained to become lead external auditors; capable of training industry members as internal auditors of on-farm biosecurity plans
1. Provide a program with learning materials for achieving a Lead Auditor status with formal accreditation of a skillset and Exemplar Global certification, (aligned to ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System, ISO 19011:2018 Guidelines for auditing management systems and ISO 31000:2018 Risk Management -Guidelines).
2. Develop specific learning assets contextualised to the process for aquaculture biosecurity plan to enable the understanding of an aquaculture biosecurity audit process, i.e. case studies.
3. Develop learning practice and support tools to enable the transference of core audit processes from trained Lead Auditors to external parties, i.e. Aquaculture farmers training model.
4. Deliver two training programs to for up to 40 participants (x1 Canberra and x1 other major city venue) by a qualified Audit Trainer.
5. Compile and report on the effectiveness of the training through participant feedback
6. Effectively manage all key milestones in the design and delivery process.

This report presents the findings, feedback, survey data, and recommendations following the successful execution of the Lead Auditor Training Course for Aquaculture Biosecurity Plans (Lead Auditor Program) for the Department of Agriculture, Water, and the Environment (Department), which included Subject Matter Experts (SME) consultations, content development, materials customisation, and the delivery of two iterations of the Lead Auditor Program via a 5-day face-to-face classroom training strategy. The project was funded by the department through the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation.
