Project number: 1992-024
Project Status:
Completed
Budget expenditure: $262,648.00
Principal Investigator: Bob Ward

Objectives

1. To determine species composition depths and geographic distributions of oreo dories in the Australian region.
2. To use a combination of genetic and meristic approaches to describe stock structure of oreo dories in southern Australian waters
3. To determine the levels of genetic variation in unexploited stock of oreo dories.

Polyunsaturated fatty acid content and nutritional quality of aquaculture feedstocks

Project number: 1991-059
Project Status:
Completed
Budget expenditure: $236,043.00
Principal Investigator: John K. Volkman
Organisation: CSIRO Oceans and Atmosphere Hobart
Project start/end date: 31 Jul 1991 - 17 Jul 1995

Objectives

1. Measure concentration of polyunsaturated fatty acids 20:5(n-3) and 22:6)n-3) in microalgae & other feedstocks used in Australian hatchies.
2. Survey the lipid and fatty acid content of microalage to determine characteristic distributions for the major algal classes and to identify new species of use to the Australian mariculture industry, particularly in tropical hatcheries.
3. Identify the effects of different environmental conditions on fatty acid and lipid composition of microalgae by comparing cultures grown under a variety of defined conditions, and hence determine how to optimise fatty acid content .
4. Assess the effects of algal foods with different fatty acid contents on animal production in support of animal growth trial with bivalve molluscs, particularly the oyster Crassostrea gigas, carried out as part of FIRDC grant 90/063.
5. Identify the effects of various diets (rotifers and copepods) which have different fatty acid compositions on the growth and survival of fish larvae in support of experiments carried out by the staff from the Tasmanian Division of Sea Fisheries
6. Assist the fishing and mariculture industries with advice on the nutrition of marine organisms, and provide a service for the analysis of polyunsaturated fatty acids and other lipids in marine samples.

Objectives

1. Use quick screening method to measure 20:5w3 and 22:6w3 fatty acids in microalgae from various Aust hatcheries.
2. Compare with existing data from standard conditions, identify features of hatchery open to be optimised.
3. Lab experiments to opt fatty acid content ...

Satellite drifters in NW Australian waters

Project number: 1988-068
Project Status:
Completed
Budget expenditure: $34,600.00
Principal Investigator: George R. Cresswell
Organisation: CSIRO Oceans and Atmosphere Hobart
Project start/end date: 28 Jun 1990 - 9 Jun 1994
Contact:
FRDC

Objectives

1. Better understand the oceans off north-western Australia by measuring currents and sea surface temperatures with satellite tracked drifters.
2. Disseminate this information to the industry.
