Underwater measurement of trawl gear in operation

The objective of this report was to measure trawling gear with the Trawl Instrumentation System (TIS). The method was similar to that described in Cruise Report no. 76. Each net and door combination was towed at various log speeds, and was maintained at each log speed for about 20 minutes while...

Yellowtail kingfish stock identification

The Kingfish Stock Identification Project was instigated in 1985 to provide information on the stock structure of yellowtail kingfish relevant to management. At that time, the N.S.W. catch had more than doubled since 1982 to approximately 360 tonnes per annum and concern was expressed at the...

Summary

The 1982 Radar, Navigation, Echo Sounder and Sonar Course was held from April 27 to May 7. This year's course for professional fishermen was attended by 11 students. It was felt that the smaller number was easier to handle in the compact training areas.

The first week of the course consisted of four (4) days at the Sydney Technical College learning and implementing navigational skills and mastering radar techniques. The College is being remodeled and the smaller number of students was easier to accommodate.

The second week was held at our training centre at Gore Bay and on board our research vessel "Kapala". Two nights of relevant films were also staged.

The course this year included two interstate lecturers and once again students came from all over N.S.W.

Role of submersibles in fisheries research

Project number: 1982-070
Project Status:
Completed
Budget expenditure: $0.00
Principal Investigator: Terry Gorman
Organisation: Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (NSW)
Project start/end date: 28 Dec 1983 - 31 Dec 1983
Contact:

Objectives

1. Evaluate small manned submersible as observation platform when underwater observation is desirable but depths preclude normal diving activity,
2. e.g. monitoring off-shore artificial reefs, fish aggregating devices, fishing gear, examination of bottom substrate
