This project sought to investigate the population biology of the commercially important species, primarily crustaceans and finfish, caught in the North West Slope Trawl Fishery (NWSTF) and Western Deep Water Trawl Fishery (WDWTF).
This work aimed to measure standing stocks, growth rates, natural mortality rates, and reproductive periodicity, to enable estimation of potential yields from the fishery.
The logbook program and database, for the collection, storage and retrieval of information on catches by commercial vessels, was completed as planned.
Squid are an increasing component in the reported byproduct of commercial prawn and finfish trawlers in northern Australian shelf waters and interest has been shown by Queensland and Northern Territory fishers in developing target fisheries for squid using jigs. In general, squid caught on jigs or in lift or other surround nets are of higher quality, larger size and, on overseas markets, fetch a much higher price than squid caught by trawling.
In support of developing squid jig fisheries and to provide management advice, this project aimed to consolidate and enhance our knowledge of their fisheries biology and suitable fishing methods for inshore squid in northern Australian waters.

This Workshop entitled 'Recreational fishing: what's the catch?' continues the series, commenced in 1985 by the Australian Society for Fish Biology. The major objective of the Workshops has been to promote the opportunity, during the Society's Annual Conference, for the national fish and fisheries expertise to focus on an issue or issues of regional or national significance. The Workshop proceedings are now widely regarded as the benchmark document of current knowledge in the Workshop subject area.
The 1995 Workshop was extremely timely. Recreational fishing is a multi-million dollar industry, with over 4.5 million Australians estimated to participate each year. A number of recent State inquiries into recreational fishing and the draft National Policy for Recreational Fishing all highlight the dearth of information on major recreational fisheries. At the same time there has been an increased and more rigorous research effort.
This was the first extensive national Workshop held in Australia focusing on aspects of assessing recreational fisheries and some of the crucial issues concerning the management of these fisheries. It dealt with methods of estimating the catch, to the thornier issues of estimating value and resource allocation.
The Workshop commenced informally with a stimulating and provocative speech by well known fishing identity Rex Hunt. Dr Bob Kearney, Director of the New South Wales Fisheries Research Institute ' set the scene for the two-day meeting by courageously attempting to estimate the total Australian recreational catch for his keynote address. His summing-up was also of the highest quality. The Society would also like to acknowledge the contribution of international guest speakers, Laurel Teirney (MAFFisheries NZ), Rudy van der Elst (Oceanographic Research Institute, Durban, South Africa), and Stephen Malvestuto (US).
These proceedings follow the format of recent years with papers delivered by panel members and followed by rapporteurs' reports of the ensuing discussions. Not surprisingly, for issues concerning recreational fishing, the latter were lively and thought provoking.
The Workshop was a great success as evidenced by the Society releasing its first ever Media Release on key outcomes of the meeting. As always many people contributed to its smooth running. Martine Kinloch and Julian Pepperell had the difficult job of actually putting the whole thing together, as convenors of the Workshop. John Glaister was responsible for successful applications to funding bodies. Gina Newton chaired the local organising committee and Phil Stewart was the Workshop Facilitator.
SeaQual was established in December 1995, as a joint initiative of the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation, the Commonwealth Department of Primary Industries and Energy (now Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry - Australia) and the Australian Seafood Industry Council. SeaQual was located in the Canberra offices of the Australian Seafood Industry Council and overall strategic direction of the project was provided by a broad industry based Steering Committee.
This report outlines the results achieved in the pursuit of SeaOual's objectives. Originally a four year program, SeaQual achieved all its milestones, and more, in only three years with significantly less resources than anticipated.
Several recommendations are made in relation to the operation of industry-government partnerships and the need to establish and maintain levels of resources and commitment. The need to establish and promote industry development activities early and to clarify expectations of all stakeholders are also identified as critical success factors for future projects.
SeaQual was established with an information and capacity building role, and released several innovative products and publications over the three years.
This report was commissioned by the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation. It presents options for people development of the Australian seafood industry, including research, management and commercial fishing. The study was conducted by Miriam O'Brien Consulting and based on interviews and information collected from people involved in the seafood industry and from rural research and development corporations.
A significant factor determining the long term viability of the Australian seafood industry is the productivity of its workforce. The productivity of the men and women employed across the industry is directly correlated to the skills, knowledge and attitudes held by them and their consistent application at the workplace.
Training, whether structured or incidental, gained in an institutional setting or on-the-job has a pivotal role in providing employees with the skills they require at the workplace.
In the early to mid 1990's, there was recognition that a coordinated approach to the provision of training systems, structures and products in the Australian seafood industry was lacking.
Industry stakeholders including training providers determined that the first step in overcoming these deficiencies was to form a national industry training organisation with close links to the Australian Seafood Industry Council. Strong industry leadership was required and ASIC was best placed to provide this.
This FRDC project has been instrumental in enabling ASIEN to establish the foundations for increasing the skill base of employees in the various sectors of the seafood industry as well as those aspiring to join the industry.
